As a director, James Mangold is probably one of the most experimental directors in Hollywood. Since starting his career by directing Heavy (1995), Mangold and then had roamed for directing various films with different genres. Starting from Girl, Interrupted (1999), which smells of drama, Kate and Leopold (2001) situated in the path of romantic comedy, thriller Identity (2003), the musical Walk the Line (2005) to the western film 3:10 to Yuma (2007 ).
Believe it or not, Mangold now set his foot on the genre of action comedy film directed by Knight and Day, who served as an reunions for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, after it was starred in Vanilla Sky (2001) together. The result is a film that may not be much discussed at the awards event like few films before Mangold. But through the Knight and Day, Mangold managed to once again prove that he is a director who is very reliable to direct a movie of any genre.
Knight and Day "begins by telling the first meeting between Roy Miller (Cruise) by June Havens (Diaz) at an airport when they will fly to Boston on a flight the same. June might consider meeting with Roy was a case of unintended but left the impression that quite special. But for Roy ... maybe not.
In a short time, June and find that Roy was a government agent who is being sought because it was considered treason by his agency. Unfortunately, its proximity with Roy over at the airport turned out to have been monitored by the Agent Fitzgerald (Peter Saarsgard) and his men, who then think that June is accomplice Roy. Now, June should work together and follow each step in order to avoid that Roy himself was captured by people who have been targeting Roy.
Knight and Day "story manuscript, written by Patrick O'Neill, in fact is not a spectacular thing and offer something new to his audience. In fact, in some parts, Knight and Day is filled with action scenes that are too excessive so that it looks so ridiculous. However, the choice of director James Mangold to package the entire film with a storyline that quickly made Knight and Day "actually appears as a comedy action film that can be relied upon.
With a duration of around 102 minutes, James Mangold unceasingly meet Knight and Day "with lots of action scenes are quite thrilling. Good indeed, but in some parts, eventually serving a given action Mangold feels pretty exhausting to be enjoyed. Here, then, Mangold fill the Knight and Day "with some comical scenes that emerged through nuanced dialogue comedy and the behavior of both actors, especially Cameron Diaz, which is quite ridiculous. The result, although still not able to cover the shortage, but at least the audience will not be grumbling about it.
Execution offered many comedy dialogue in this movie also became very lively with a very good chemistry between the two main stars, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Cruise, although the last few years often get an eye assessment due to his personal life story, again proving that he is an actor who can be relied upon. By professionalism, Cruise is one of the most talented actors that ever existed in Hollywood. With charm and extraordinary charisma, Cruise always managed to look attractive in every movie, including Knight and Day.
Not much really to be said about Cameron Diaz. This is not the first time Diaz played in the movie kind, and even has become typical to portray a woman who was trapped in dangerous situations but able to stay to appear comical. No one, Diaz even looks good in playing his character. Interlace chemistry he had with Cruise in Vanilla Sky (2001) increasingly looks to hone the fine in this movie. Not surprisingly, an important point gained Knight and Day "comes from the chemistry shown both throughout the film.
Besides Cruise and Diaz, there are several other supporters in this movie, especially Viola Davis, Peter Saarsgard and Paul Dano who appeared as the main supporter. Unfortunately, Knight and Day "is intended specifically for Cruise and Diaz's appearance that makes the supporting cast - which appears quite good - not able to provide a more prominent appearance again.
In the script the story, Knight and Day is filled with too many action scenes, which is actually very fun to watch, but ended with a bit tiring when presented with an excessive portion. This causes the flow of storytelling plays a little choked up and make the Knight and Day "in some parts seem a little dull. Even so, James Mangold ability to organize every scene with a very neat as well as direction to the two main stars, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, which makes them appear with excellent chemistry, making the Knight and Day "actually became a spectacle of light, very entertaining but still full of quality.
