World Cup South Africa

Johannesburg - The opening of the World Cup in South Africa certainly was not attended by Nelson Mandela. Anti-apartheid leaders attend because it's off center in an atmosphere of mourning.

Mandela was grieving over the death of Zenani Mandela who is a great-grandson of the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Nelson Mandela this morning to get news about Zenani Mandela's tragic death in a car accident. It is therefore not appropriate for him to attend the opening party directly for the 2010 World Cup," the statement submitted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, through its official site, as reported by Reuters.

"We understand that people in South Africa and around the world will together provide his sympathies to Mr Mandela and his family in this tragedy."

"We believe that the World Cup 2010 is a monumental and historic opportunity for South Africa and the African continent and we sanga sure this performance will be a great success."

At the opening ceremony tonight, will be represented by his grandson Mandela Madiba.
